The Red Devils Poised to Sign Germany Striker Lea Schüller away from the Bavarian Giants
The Women's Super League club are finalising sealing the deal for prolific German striker Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Marquee Acquisition for the WSL Side
The forward, with half a year remaining on her deal, has been a prolific goalscorer for her club and the national team. She has netted over 100 goals for the German giants and scored 54 times in 82 caps for her country. This signing will be seen as a major signing for the Women’s Super League side.
Departure from Munich has been anticipated since she was seen fighting back tears while applauding the German club’s fans after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
It was reported in December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its leading forwards. According to reports, the formalities for the move are now finalised.
Reliable Goal Threat to Boost United's Attack
The 28-year-old’s arrival should represent a significant uplift to the team's forward line. Schüller has been remarkably consistent in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.
- Over seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the last term, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She claimed the Golden Boot in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Building Steam at Old Trafford
Securing the German international coincides with a period when United seem to be gathering positive momentum.
Recent on-pitch successes include qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the mid-season window has seen additional activity:
- The acquisition of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The new deal for Japanese playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since arriving in 2023.
Regarding Miyazawa’s new deal, a senior figure stated: “Miyazawa is now a vital part to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and technical ability allows her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”
Lundkvist, who has joined from a side from the NWSL, said: “You can sense how much the club have grown in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and performing in the top European competition.”
