The Mighty Nein's Opening Sequence Chose the Wrong Critical Role Track
This latest animated series, the most recent animated series from the beloved role-playing group, revealed a new introductory sequence. It features our favorite cast of misfits, misfits, and criminals kicking ass and taking names, while teasing at several agonizing backstories for key figures including the voice actor's wizard Caleb, and another actor's orc warlock, the character Fjord.
Overall, the intro looks stunning. But I couldn't help feeling that something was lost in the song choice.
This sequence uses "Welcome to the Continent", an exceptional composition created by artist Colm McGuinness. It's a track from the soundtrack album of that title, the second one put out by Critical Role Productions LLC's record label their music brand. It's a great sentimental choice, and I believe that fans of the sequel series will love its inclusion.
But for me, The series' intro doesn't quite capture the excitement and energy that accompanied the second campaign's actual-play adventure. "Your Turn to Roll", written by musician Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic in my view when it was initially unveiled in 2015, and it improved further when co-founder the performer added lyrics to the melody for the series' animated intro in 2018.
Featuring vocals from one actress, another performer, a co-star, as well as Riegel himself, the track was catchy and enjoyable. Back then, I hadn't seen the second campaign at that point, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my device. This track that knows how to get you pumped before you start an installment of adventurous fun.
The Mighty Nein's opening with "Welcome to Wildemount" doesn't strike the right notes in my opinion. It's an impressive composition, but from what I know of this party, I feel that its mood is a little off.
Of course, the creators has stated that the animated show will have a few surprises and variations from the actual-play campaign. An adjusted mood for its intro seems to be among these.
This animated adventure will be available to watch on Prime Video from November 19. For those eager before that, or wish to prepare to get to know the characters of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the actual play are available on the audio platform and the video site.
