The ice cream brand's Co-Founder Claims Unilever Prevented Pro-Palestinian Ice Cream Flavor
The co-founders of the well-known frozen dessert company Ben & Jerry's has claimed that corporate owner Unilever prevented the launch of a new Palestine-themed ice cream flavor.
Ben Cohen, who established the business with Jerry Greenfield, announced how he plans to personally create this new flavor within an individual series showcasing causes Ben & Jerry's has been barred from addressing publicly.
Ongoing Dispute Involving Creators and Corporate Owner
The recent announcement escalates the ongoing disagreement between the internationally recognized dessert company and its corporate parent, the UK-based packaged goods corporation that has owned Ben & Jerry's for over two decades.
The co-founders have claimed how the parent company along with its ice cream arm the Magnum brand improperly prevented Ben & Jerry's against "honouring its social mission".
Watermelon Flavor as a Symbol of Support
The entrepreneur stated through social media that he's developing an innovative watermelon-based frozen dessert, asking for public suggestions for naming options plus additional components.
“I'm doing what they couldn't,” Mr. Cohen stated from a cooking set. “I'm creating a watermelon-based ice cream that advocates for lasting ceasefire for Palestinians and calls for repairing the damage that was done there.”
The watermelon has emerged as a symbol for solidarity with the Palestinian people due to its coloration, which mirror the colors in the Palestinian flag – red, green, black and white.
Historical Social Engagement and Current Developments
In 2021, Ben & Jerry's refused to sell their merchandise in areas occupied by Israel, leading to Unilever selling their Israel business to an Israeli distributor, thereby permitting ongoing distribution within disputed territories.
The new product line is being developed under Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the activist ice cream brand which originally created in 2016 to support former political contender Senator Sanders via the product "Bernie's Return".
Leadership Changes and Future Intentions
Mr. Cohen indicated that he plans to create additional ice cream flavors focusing on issues that the company was prevented from addressing publicly by corporate restrictions.
This development follows co-founder Mr. Greenfield resigned from Ben & Jerry's recently, following decades of involvement, mentioning worries regarding how its independence was undermined after Unilever's decision to curb its social activism.
At that time, Ben Cohen commented how "Jerry has a really big heart and this conflict with Unilever was deeply distressing him."
"My heart compels me to continue to work inside the company to fight for its independence ensuring that the company can actualise its ethical purpose, the values that established its foundation while upholding for decades," he explained to journalists.
