The Fast-Food Giant Takes Down Artificial Intelligence Christmas Ad After Public Outcry.
The global fast-food chain has taken down a Christmas advert produced via Artificial Intelligence after facing significant public disapproval.
The brief spot was produced via AI video tools and was initially uploaded publicly for McDonald's Netherlands back on 6 December.
Viewer Response and Removal
Soon after it aired, commenters criticized the implementation of AI in the advert. A number of described it as "creepy" and "awkwardly stitched together".
"This incident represents an important lesson as we investigate the effective use of generative technology," said a spokesperson from the company.
The advert was produced for McDonald's by Dutch company TBWA\Neboko and US production company The Sweetshop. It portrayed a series of things that often go badly during the festive season, with the tagline "not the most wonderful time of the year".
The Movement of AI Commercials
Campaigns that include generative AI have become a increasing phenomenon among prominent brands, notably for the Christmas period.
- Another beverage giant has recently released consecutive AI-generated holiday commercials.
- Technical Challenges: As clips made with current AI video tools are susceptible to become unstable the longer they run, the majority of such clips tend to be about short in length.
- Industry Concerns: The ad also provoked concerns about the replacement of human roles in the production industry, with some commenters noting it might reduce work for production staff.
Response from the Creators
Following the commercial being pulled, a producer's chief executive, Melanie Bridge, defended the project.
She stated, the development took "seven weeks" and involved producing "thousands of takes" which were then shaped afterward "just as we would on any standard production".
"This wasn't an experiment," she commented. "It was a proper commercial."
Divisive Public Reception
While the Dutch McDonald's ad was largely criticized, the response for other AI-assisted holiday ads has been varied.
For instance, a recent AI-generated holiday ad from Coca-Cola according to analysis received a significant "positive feedback" from the public.
However, several companies have also encountered criticism for employing the technique in advertising. Italian brand Valentino, for example, was criticized for advertisements that some described as "cheap" and "disturbing".
The situation underscores the ongoing debate within the advertising and creative sectors about the balance between new tools and audience reception.
