The Attorney General Found Guilty in Contentious Leak Case

Spain's Attorney General, Álvaro García Ortiz, has been forced to resign after being found guilty of disclosing confidential information in a highly contentious case that has accentuated political rifts within the country.
Judicial Decision and Sanctions
The highest court determined that the attorney general had illegally disclosed information about the tax status of entrepreneur a prominent business figure, who is the partner of a senior conservative politician.
The judicial body imposed a 24-month prohibition from his position and a penalty of €7,200. Furthermore, he must pay ten thousand euros to Mr González Amador as restitution.
Political Fallout
The trial of García Ortiz intensified the previously strained relations between the progressive administration of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and the right-wing opposition.
Contrasting positions were underlined by reactions to the guilty verdict.
"Sánchez must offer an apology to Spaniards, resign and call elections, in that order," said Ester Muñoz for the conservative People's Party.
The administration stated it disagreed with the decision but respected it and would proceed with the selection of a new attorney general.

However, there was no direct evidence connecting the attorney general to the disclosure and multiple reporters stated under oath during the proceedings that he had not provided information of their information.
Regarding the official communication, the attorney general stated he was merely rectifying the inaccurate information.
