Zak Crawley – 1

Tipped in Aussie pitches but recorded only the fourth duck in both innings from an English opener facing only 11 balls.

Duckett – Five

Got beginnings in both innings. His dismissal during the match was when it began to fall apart for the English side.

Ollie Pope – 6

Appears better for technical tweaks. The first Test in the series is usually his best, after which his form dips. The team require him to kick on.

Root – 1

Miles away from his maiden century in Australia. The side need the nous from their star performer if they are to come back from this defeat.

Harry Brook – 5

His half-century in the first innings was lively, yet important. Awful shot in the follow-on.

Stokes – Six

Returned from injury to take a five-wicket haul, but looked short of rhythm with the bat. Lost control while fielding in the face of Head's aggressive batting.

Jamie Smith – 4

Might possess the skills to succeed in Australia, yet must to smarten up. Can expect a lot of bouncers from now on.

Gus Atkinson – 5

Involved in the impressive England first-innings bowling performance and attempted to contribute with the bat in the second innings. Part of the bowlers that collapsed on Saturday evening.

Carse – 5

Comparable to the previous, with added mustard of being taken apart by Head.

Jofra Archer – Five

Appeared awesome with the ball initially and proved the top of a bad bunch later. Could still have an impact on the series.

Mark Wood – Five

Went wicketless, but extremely impressive to just take part considering his absence.

Australian Team Player Ratings

Jake Weatherald – Six

First-timer had tough luck to face to Jofra Archer early on, later contributed in the stunning run chase.

Usman Khawaja – Three

An unusual Test. Appeared fit and spent time off the field. Held on to a couple of key catches in the slips, but also seemed slow in the cordon. Gets a mark due to his injury which enabled Travis Head to bat as opener.

Labuschagne – 7

An effective return to the team. Handled the English pressure more effectively than others in the first innings, then supported Travis Head in the second.

Steve Smith – 5

Seemed out of sorts in the first innings. Needless before the game comments about Panesar.

Head – Nine

Perhaps churlish to not award a perfect score, however he attempted a rather ropey stroke in the first innings. His second-innings hundred was an all-time great innings.

Cameron Green – 5

Claimed the key dismissal of Pope early. Rattled by a Wood bouncer when he batted. Hardly needed in the second half.

Alex Carey – 5

Tried an aggressive response versus the English attack on the first evening. Tidy behind the stumps.

Starc – 9

Carried the weight of the bowling in the absence of Pat Cummins and Hazlewood achieving the first Australian Ashes series 10-for in 20 years.

Boland – Six

Below top form initially. Got better in the second to spark the England batting collapse.

Doggett – Six

Steady first appearance. Quite able replacement for the main bowlers and Hazlewood.

Lyon – 2

Virtually a spectator in a match dominated by fast bowling. Possibly suffered a knock after being hit by Wood.
