SNAP Payments Expected to Cease for 41 Million Throughout Prolonged US Government Shutdown
The United States Department of Agriculture stated on Saturday that nutrition assistance payments through a critical national support systems are not going out during the coming month due to the ongoing government funding lapse.
Closure Continues Into 25th Day
The funding lapse lasted three and a half weeks as officials revealed the news, coming after demands from hundreds of Democratic representatives asking the department to tap into contingency funds to cover next month's benefits.
“The reality is, resources are exhausted,” the USDA stated. “At this time, there will be no benefits issued” beginning in November.
Millions Affected
More than 41 million individuals depend on these monthly payments, as reported by federal data. Some regions, such as one southwestern state, use of SNAP affects a significant portion of citizens.
Internal communications seen by journalists revealed that the department chose not to tap reserve funds to cover next month's assistance.
Political Stalemate
Republicans and Democrats remain deadlocked over how to support and resume government operations.
Remarks from the leader of a prominent policy organization indicated that the administration had opportunities to take earlier action to prevent benefits from running out.
“It could have, and should have taken steps before now to make arrangements to utilize available money,” the comments added. “Conversely, officials could opt out to secure political leverage” while GOP lawmakers attempt to push upper chamber Democrats to vote for a funding package that would resume the federal government.
States Prepare
State leaders from two affected states issued emergency declarations recently to make money available to address food insecurity in anticipation of food benefits expiring next month.
