Scream OG Star the Actor Fears He Could Ruin the Franchise with the Seventh Installment.
The highly anticipated slasher sequel Scream 7 is set to arrive in theaters next year, and it is preparing for a massive gathering of familiar faces. This latest installment signals the legendary return of Neve Campbell as final girl Sidney Prescott, after sitting out the last entry. She will, as usual, be joined by Courtney Cox as reporter Gail Weathers, but they won't be the only beloved characters returning to the fray.
"Returning to a character you portrayed in your twenties when you're 55 was a daunting task that gave me sleepless nights," the actor reveals.
An Unexpected Comeback for Fallon Favorites
It has been established that a trio of distinct characters from earlier films are set to return in this new outing, despite dying in prior movies. The precise method of their return is still unclear. Audiences should get ready for the return of the beloved and seemingly immortal officer Dewey Riley, the filmmaker and third film killer Roman Bridger, and a member of the original killer pair, Stu Macher.
The Weight of Iconic Legacy
For Matthew Lillard, returning to the series for the first time since a brief appearance is a dream come true, though he is apprehensive about the audience response. The actor clearly remembers the precise instant he got the news from the original writer.
"I recall the conversation. I remember the pleasantries. I recall him posing the question. That instance is permanently etched on my mind," he states. "So I'm incredibly honored to be back. I'm really excited to be back."
Stu Macher has attained cult status in the decades since the original film was released, which left Lillard feeling quite nervous.
"The reality is, that's a role that is infamous, for better or worse," he explains. "A part that is now embodied in every single Scream mask that appears every Halloween."
The Fear of Letting Down the Fans
Now that production has wrapped, Lillard is in the same position like the rest of us to see the finished film. He admits to feeling significant pressure about hoping not to be the one who damages the beloved series.
"The outcome is either a hit and people are thrilled to have you, or it's a miss," Lillard observes. "At the start, I have no idea if the film will be successful. I don't know if people are eager to see me. I've definitely seen plenty of people state and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they going back to this idea?' So the reality is that I feel a lot of responsibility to not ruin the franchise. I hope people exiting Scream 7 and saying, 'Well, that sucked, and Matthew Lillard was the cause.'"
Theories and Anticipation Abound
While countless dedicated fans are excited for Stu's reappearance, the big question of how he and the others return remains. Maybe they exist as manifestations in Sidney's mind, like a previous plot device. Or, perhaps they are in some way all alive in a strange shared situation. The chance of a meta-horror story, reminiscent of earlier horror movies, also exists.
Moviegoers will discover the truth when Scream 7 arrives in theaters.
