More than a million people each week show suicidal tendencies when interacting with ChatGPT, OpenAI states.
Based on a latest announcement from OpenAI, over one million conversational AI individuals each week send messages that contain "direct signals of potential suicide planning or thoughts".
This finding is included in an overview on how the AI assistant addresses sensitive conversations and is one of the most direct assertions from the artificial intelligence giant regarding the extent of how AI can exacerbate emotional challenges.
Mental Health Situations and Severe Conditions
Besides its estimates on self-harm considerations and associated conversations, the AI firm also indicated that approximately 0.07% of active users – about 560,000 out of its reported 800 million weekly users – display "likely signals of mental health emergencies connected to severe mental conditions".
The post cautioned that these conversations were difficult to identify or assess, and that this represented an initial analysis.
Increased Scrutiny and Lawsuits
As the company releases findings on psychological concerns related to its primary service, the firm is undergoing increased scrutiny after a widely reported lawsuit from the relatives of a adolescent who took his own life after extensive engagement with the AI chatbot.
The regulatory agency last month also launched a comprehensive inquiry into organizations that create AI chatbots, including OpenAI, to determine how they measure negative impacts on minors.
Latest Version and Better Safeguards
The AI firm claimed in its update that its recent GPT-5 update lowered the number of concerning actions from its offering and strengthened user safety in a system assessment featuring in excess of 1,000 self-destructive exchanges.
"Our recent automated evaluations rate the new GPT-5 model at 91% compliant with our desired behaviors, compared to 77% for the prior iteration," the company's post says.
The company mentioned that GPT-5 enhanced access to emergency services and incorporated alerts for people to pause during extended conversations.
Medical Professionals and Research Support
To make improvements to the AI, the company said it recruited 170 healthcare experts from its worldwide health community of health care experts to help its investigation over the last several months, which featured evaluating the security of its model's responses and helping write the AI's responses to psychological inquiries.
"Included in this work, clinical experts reviewed in excess of 1,800 system replies featuring serious mental health situations and evaluated answers from the updated chatbot to previous models," the AI firm mentioned.
System Challenges
Machine learning specialists and public health advocates have traditionally cautious of AI's tendency to validate individuals' choices or misconceptions regardless of whether they may be dangerous, an problem known as excessive agreement.
Psychological professionals have also been concerned about people using AI chatbots for mental health help and cautioned how it could harm at-risk individuals.
Organizational View
The wording in OpenAI's post distinguishes the organization from any potential causal links between its service and the emotional situations that its customers are experiencing.
"Psychological indicators and emotional distress are common everywhere in contemporary populations, and an increasing user base indicates that some portion of AI interactions feature these circumstances," OpenAI's post mentioned.
Future Directions
The company's leader in the past few weeks announced in a post on X that the company had made advancements in handling psychological concerns, stating that the AI developer would relax limitations and in the near future commence to allow adults to produce mature content.
"We made the conversational system quite limited to guarantee we were being careful with emotional problems. We understand this caused it to be less valuable/pleasurable to numerous individuals who had no mental health problems, but considering the gravity of the issue we sought to handle this properly," the leader wrote. "Since we have been able to mitigate the serious mental health issues and have updated systems, we are ready to confidently reduce the constraints in the majority of situations."
