Israel Gives Green Light to Nineteen Additional Outposts in Contested West Bank

Israel's defense cabinet has voted to recognize the recognition of nineteen fresh outposts in the contested West Bank, representing a continued campaign for territorial growth.

Far-right Treasury Chief Bezalel Smotrich, who lives in a settlement and put forward the step together with Defense Chief Israel Katz, declared that the approval was about preventing the formation of a Palestinian state.

Under international law, Israeli settlements in the disputed territories are viewed as in violation of international law.

The move has sparked criticism from Saudi Arabia. The United Nations chief Antonio Guterres has said that Israel's "persistent" growth of communities fuels tensions, curtails Palestinian use of land, and undermines the prospects of a sovereign Palestine.

Increased Tensions and Diplomatic Fallout

Violence in the region has surged since the hostilities in Gaza erupted in October 2023, further heightening fears that the growth of communities could entrench Israel's occupation and weaken the possibility for a peaceful resolution based on two states.

The two-state solution refers to the creation of a State of Palestine in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, with East Jerusalem as its capital, largely along the lines that were in place before the 1967 Six-Day Arab-Israeli war.

Since taking office in 2022, the incumbent Israeli government has significantly increased the approval of new settlements and started the legalisation process for informal settler outposts, recognising them as "extensions" of established settlements.

Sustained Growth

The latest decision takes the cumulative figure of settlements authorized over the past three years to 69, as stated by Smotrich.

These approvals come only a few days after the UN said that construction in settlements had reached its highest level since the year 2017.

The newest group of authorizations includes the revival of two settlements — Ganim and Kadim — which were evacuated nearly in 2005.

Previously, the Israeli government authorized twenty-two new communities in the territories - labeled as the biggest wave of approvals in decades.

Furthermore, the government gave the go-ahead for plans last summer to erect in excess of three thousand residences in the so-called E1 corridor between the capital and the Maale Adumim community, a plan that had been on hold for decades amid strong foreign opposition.

On that occasion, the Finance Minister stated it would "bury the notion of a Palestinian state."

Population Realities and Global Reactions

Roughly 700,000 settlers dwell in about one hundred and sixty settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, as per data from the Israeli anti-settlement group Peace Now. This is land that the Palestinian people seek for a prospective independent state.

This ongoing construction has angered Arab states who have steadfastly contended it erodes chances for a peaceful two-state outcome.

It has also fueled fears about the potential incorporation of the occupied West Bank.

Ex- US President Donald Trump had once cautioned the Israeli leadership about such a move, telling a publication that Israel would lose all its support from the United States if it happened.

Recently, the United Kingdom - joined by other nations including Australia and Canada - recognised a State of Palestine, a significant although primarily ceremonial adjustment in official stance.

The Israeli government was against this step, with PM Benjamin Netanyahu declaring that a sovereign Palestine "is off the table."
