Fiona Shaw Talks About Her Professional Journey: From Star Wars to Wizarding World

In a recent interview, esteemed performer Fiona Shaw opened up about her varied professional experiences spanning many years and iconic roles.

The Impactful Andor Monologue

While talking about her memorable funeral speech in the Star Wars series Andor, Shaw disclosed that the initial version included stronger language. "I did say a different word in my speech," she clarified, "while the screenwriter hoped that Disney would accept it."

The actress described the unusual shooting circumstances for that particular scene. "While I delivered that speech, I was recorded with about 200 cameras to create a hologram. I was entirely by myself in a massive studio, with no director nor crew members there with me."

Jane Austen Adaptations

Regarding the upcoming adaptation of Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility, Shaw expressed excitement about finishing production. "We recently completed shooting it," she stated, "and what an actor rarely witness is the completed movie."

She praised filmmaker Georgia Oakley as "really lovely and quite confident." The filming took place in stunning houses throughout Britain, including sites within Dorset, Knebworth, and Devonshire.

Shaw also reflected on her earlier performance in the 1995 adaptation of Persuasion, playing Mrs. Croft. "Our filmmaker had particular demands: no wigs and only candlelight," she recalled. "He genuinely wanted to capture the experience of nineteenth-century existence."

Wizarding World Reflections

When asked about her experience with the Harry Potter franchise, Shaw spoke fondly about working with the late Richard Griffiths. "He represented the most elegant, creative and talented man," she shared. "He possessed the most beautiful penmanship and on one occasion mailed me a note inviting me to lunch in elaborate gothic lettering."

The actress portrayed Griffiths as constantly speaking and telling interesting stories with both her and the young actors on set. "He possessed fantastic general knowledge so we would listen captivated by his tales."

Theatrical Work

Discussing her New York stage role in the tragedy Medea, Shaw recalled how emotionally demanding the production was. "I met one of the ensemble actors three years later, who said: 'I'm not over it yet,'" she shared.

The production continued for years, beginning in Ireland, then traveling to England, followed by Washington DC, the Brooklyn Academy of Music, and ultimately Manhattan. "We became very close as a company," she noted.

Performance Philosophy

When questioned about her ability to transition between humor and seriousness, Shaw clarified that "comedy connects us as it's about rupturing the norm." However, she confessed that "prior to a comedy, I always sleep poorly, because you have to find the rhythm during performance."

Regarding her technique for tackling different characters, Shaw commented: "I discover each one difficult. But even if the character you're portraying is rather different from you, there is often something about them that you recognize."

Recent Work

Discussing her latest role in the production Hot Milk, Shaw described her character Rose as "a terrible woman though you cannot perform anything from that viewpoint." The actress elaborated that Rose experiences a nervous system condition that causes mobility issues.

"She is unaware of the impact she has on her daughter," Shaw noted. "All she knows is that she wants to improve. She's both benign and blind. Maybe this represents what many people resemble."

Personal Reflections

Upon hearing that viewers consider her perfect for gang boss roles, Shaw answered with amusement: "Goodness me! I'm really not intimidating. But perhaps when filled with intention, my features might seem threatening."

The actress continued: "I am in life sometimes quite scatty so perhaps it's therapeutic for me to play highly intellectual, organized characters. I try to portray interesting people so I never judge them. Don't be scared – come and say hello!"

Love for Language

Talking about her renowned performance of the poetic work The Waste Land, Shaw expressed her profound relationship with words and verse. "I'm consistently devoted in the language," she stated, "because the clues to everything are contained within the selection of vocabulary."

She believes that "verse constitutes the polished form of language, or the moment that has been captured." When people reduce to what they genuinely wish to express, it's often poetic."

Voice Recording

Concerning her acclaimed audiobook performances, particularly Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, Shaw revealed that "I enjoyed recording Alice in Wonderland because I incorporated all my acquaintances into it – my friends and other actors."

She described how she performed the caterpillar as channeling Alan Rickman, and portrayed the Red Queen evoking Geraldine McEwan. "It consistently feels a privilege to record and perform literature," she concluded, "despite needing extended periods of work."

Collaborating with the Director

Remembering her time working with celebrated filmmaker Terrence Malick on his film Tree of Life, Shaw portrayed him as distinctive. "All that the director says and does is unique," she observed.

The actress recounted a particular memory of their first meeting: "He left a message on my voicemail which said, 'I wonder, would you assist me with my film?' We went out for breakfast. He said, 'Well, what are you going to have?' I said, 'I'm going to have scrambled eggs.' He said, 'I think I'll have scrambled eggs too,' like it was the most unusual selection in the world."

The actress also described Malick's distinctive method of asking actors "Would you prefer to do this scene indoors or outdoors?" – inquiries seldom made by other filmmakers. "He exclusively used natural light," she added, "meaning actors could perform interior near glass or exterior on location."

Regarding the extensive editing process, Shaw revealed that "He takes approximately three years to edit the film. I had heard from the producer following twenty-four months that I was likely among the primary roles, but by the time the film was released, I was mostly removed."

The actress finished by characterizing Malick's unique process: "He builds this enormous structure, and he takes away many components. He essentially deconstructs films."
