Democratic lawmakers Denounce Trump After He Claims They Should Face Execution
Lawmakers from the Democratic party demonstrated outrage after Donald Trump alleged a contingent of Democratic representatives of being "traitors" and declared they should be detained and punished "by death" following their posting of a controversial video.
The Message That Sparked the Controversy
The recorded message, published on Tuesday, showcases six Democratic elected officials who previously worked in defense or security roles.
"As we did, you all swore an vow to defend and uphold this national charter," the representatives stated in the 90-second video. "Currently, the dangers to our governing document are not only from abroad, but from right here at home. Our statutes are explicit, you can reject illegal orders, you can decline illegal orders, you should refuse improper directives. No one has to execute orders that break the legal system or our founding principles."
Donald Trump's Angry Reply
The video message seemed to trigger a angry reaction from the previous commander-in-chief.
On the following morning, Trump wrote on Truth Social: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In another post, he declared: "This is really bad, and Harmful to our Country. Their words cannot be permitted to remain. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a third publication, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" He also redistributed a comment that said: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Democratic Officials React
Following Trump's statements on that day, Top Democrats issued a unified statement condemning the comments.
"Political violence has no place in the United States," they declared. "Congress members who participated in the video all worked our United States with great patriotism and honor. We strongly censure Donald Trump's appalling and harmful calls for execution against congressional representatives, and call on Republican lawmakers to forcefully do the same."
The Democratic leaders also mentioned that they had been in contact with security officials "to guarantee the safety of these representatives and their loved ones."
"Donald Trump must right away delete these unhinged online messages and recant his violent discourse before he causes harm," the statement added.
Representatives' Firm Answer
The officials who appeared in the video also published a declaration.
"We serve as ex-military personnel and security experts who love this United States and took an pledge to protect and defend the constitution of the United States," they said. "That oath continues forever, and we plan to keep it. No threat, pressure, or call for violence will deter us from that important responsibility."
"What's most telling is that the president considers it liable to punishment by capital punishment for us to restate the law," they added. "Armed forces members should know that we have their protection as they fulfill their pledge to the constitution and obligation to obey only proper directives. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our obligation."
They added: "The entire nation must join forces and censure the former president's requests for our execution and political violence. This is a time for ethical certainty."
Additional Governmental Responses
The Opposition leader also condemned Trump's statements and shared on social media: "We must be absolutely clear: the President of the United States is demanding the death of elected officials."
He stated: "This represents an clear THREAT. Every Senator, each house member, all citizens – regardless of party – should denounce this without delay and unconditionally."
The Conservative official defended Trump's assertion that the Democrats had engaged in "treason", labeling the video as "wildly inappropriate", commenting: "This constitutes very dangerous, you have leading members of Congress telling military personnel to defy commands, I think that represents without precedent in American history."
The Conservative representative also according to sources told media outlets that in what he reviewed of Trump's posts, Trump was "describing the violation of rebellion" but that "legal experts have to parse the wording and determine all that."
Executive Branch Response
During a administration briefing on later that day, when inquired by a media member, "Does the president want to kill congressional representatives?", the White House press secretary replied: "Certainly not."
"We should understand about what the former president is reacting to," the representative declared. "You have active officials of the US Congress who conspired to orchestrate a recorded statement to personnel of the US military, to current military personnel advising them to defy the president's proper directives."
She added: "The integrity of our military relies on the command structure, and if that system is violated, it can cause casualties, it can lead to disorder, and that is exactly what these congressional representatives ... are basically promoting."
