A Minimum of 98 Palestinians Have Perished in Custody Starting From October 2023, Israeli Data Indicates

According to data provided by Israel, no fewer than 98 Palestinians have perished while in custody since October 2023. A human rights group based in Israel has reported that the real toll is almost certainly substantially larger, due to hundreds of unaccounted for people from Gaza.

Study Results

A new investigation tracked fatalities caused by assault, medical neglect, and inadequate nutrition. Investigators utilized freedom of information requests, forensic reports, and discussions with lawyers, human rights defenders, family members, and eyewitnesses.

Government bodies disclosed complete data solely covering the first eight months of the war. During this time, reported numbers reveal an unprecedented casualty rate among detained Palestinians, amounting to a single fatality each 96 hours.

Latest Data

The military most recently revised information on custodial deaths for May 2024, and correctional authorities by September 2024. Analysts identified a further 35 fatalities in custody after these timeframes and verified them with official sources.

Even with the overall count of fatalities recorded being significantly higher than earlier projections, it probably does not reflect the entire scope of Palestinian casualties, per the director of the prisoner monitoring division.

“Even though we are presenting proof for a higher number of fatalities than earlier indicated, this is an incomplete account,” he explained. “We are certain that there are yet detainees who lost their lives in custody that we have not identified.”

Civilian Casualties

Classified government records indicates that the vast majority of Palestinian prisoners from Gaza who lost their lives in prison were non-combatants, based on a simultaneous inquiry.

In May of this year, a defense forces registry following all fighters in Gaza, a registry of more than 47,000 named individuals, documented just 21 fatalities in detention. By that date, 65 individuals from Palestine from Gaza had lost their lives in detention.

Detention Conditions

Assault, mistreatment, and further cruelty of detainees from Palestine is now standard practice across Israel’s prison network over two years of war. Top government figures have openly admitted inadequate food and an subterranean prison confining Palestinians who are denied sunlight.

Existing and previous prisoners and whistleblowers from the defense forces have all alleged widespread breaches of human rights protocols.

Organized Maltreatment

The institutionalised cruelty occurred alongside a disturbing rise in deaths recorded across a minimum of 12 prison sites in Israel. Over ten years preceding the hostilities, there were on average two or three deaths a year.

“This isn’t just an individual case here and there. It is institutional and it is expected to endure,” a spokesperson commented, partially since there is a culture of almost complete immunity for harming and abusing Palestinians.

Just one case of assaulting detainees has come to trial, with the soldier handed a punishment to seven months. An attempt to prosecute other suspects over a vicious assault including assault resulted in public rallies and the arrest of Israel’s senior defense attorney, with the suspects now insisting that indictments against them be withdrawn.

Absence of Consequences

“In spite of this large quantity of deaths, over two years not a single person has been arrested,” the representative said. “There have been no indictments over any fatality.

“As long as these practices continue to be enforced, all Palestinian detainees in confinement is in danger, also the those in good health, even the juveniles who have no health problems.”

High-Profile Cases

Some deaths in custody have been widely reported, for instance a middle-aged hospital director who died in prison after 120 days in detention.

A detainee held with the individual testified that he was brought to the yard by correctional officers shortly before his demise, obviously hurt and unclothed from the waist down. His corpse remains unreleased to Gaza.

Further inmates who perished in confinement by Israeli authorities remain anonymous. The prison service and armed services gave researchers with the figure of deaths in detention, and minimal further data including the location where they died, but not the prisoners’ names.

Recognition Difficulties

For 21 instances, primarily people from Gaza, analysts were unable to correlate the few details supplied by authorities to a fatality documented by human rights groups, via accounts from former inmates or reporting in the media.

The detainees’ families could be unaware about their relatives’ casualties either, as Israel has made it difficult to monitor Palestinians it is detaining. During 210 days at the outset of the war, the armed services declined to provide basic information about the condition of numerous of persons confined in Gaza, in effect implementing a practice of involuntary missing persons, as stated by the rights monitoring body.

Insufficient Disclosure

Starting in May 2024, government bodies have provided an digital correspondence for enquiries about Palestinian individuals from Gaza, but this has provided only a incomplete and restricted enhancement. Analysts noted|observed|commented on
